Hayatsu Architects were commissioned to transform a neglected lane connecting the main village road with the Coniston Institute, the Ruskin Museum and renew interest in the wider heritage of copper mining in the area. In 1874 at Oxford University, John Ruskin taught his students the art of road-building to instil the value of labour and community service, with participation of notable figures like Oscar Wilde. The 140th anniversary of Ruskin’s move to Coniston water and his close observation of both artistic heritage and the natural world all served as inspiration for the new project in entitled ‘Ruskin’s Road’.
