The project began in 2022 with an experimental road closure that revealed the site’s potential as a pedestrian space, hosting markets, outdoor dining, art, play and planting. Following this success, funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Mayor of London enabled its permanent transformation. Hayatsu Architects were appointed in 2024 as lead consultant through the GLA’s A+U framework to design and deliver the square within budget and programme.
Extensive consultation shaped the design, including public drop-ins, stakeholder meetings and school workshops. Year 10 students from Laurel Park School co-designed decorative brick mosaics illustrating local history, now embedded in a central pathway, while pupils from Hazelwood Primary School helped plant new green areas.
Completed in May 2025, the square provides a flexible, accessible space connected to the high street. It introduces 50m² of new planting with sustainable drainage, informal seating made from recycled materials, power for community events, and a shared surface encouraging pedestrian priority, creating a vibrant yet restful civic space for everyday life.
